Author Spotlight: Sarah Hewitt

Sarah Hewitt is the award-winning author and illustrator of ‘Anna’s Garden’. The book’s themes of kindness, empathy and discovering what makes you happy feel like a perfect reflection of Sarah and her journey.

Family is also a huge inspiration to Sarah: “Just like reading, creating stories and drawing pictures have always been with me,” Sarah said in an interview with The Letterpress Project. “My grandfather loved to draw, and I have many happy memories of sitting with him and creating pictures together. He was the inspiration for my first published picture book”.

‘Anna’s Garden’ was sparked by Sarah’s own journey and that of her daughter. The book’s main character — Anna — is a neurodivergent little girl. “It is a book about kindness, founded on my experiences living with my own differences (dyspraxia) and my daughter’s (autism),” explained Sarah. “It aims to send a message to all children to celebrate difference and recognise its strengths”.

Anna’s Garden — Available Now!

A classic rhyming picture book with a charming and traditional art style, ‘Anna’s Garden’ is somewhat of a throwback, but with a modern outlook. Sarah describes herself as “driven to create books which empower young people to embrace their true selves,” and that’s exactly what ‘Anna’s Garden’ achieves.

As Anna shares her joy and interests with others, her garden begins to bloom. The book also promotes the importance of independent play, children discovering the things they like on their own, and having the confidence to tell others about the things they like and the things they don’t.

“Anna’s Garden is so precious to me,” adds Sarah. “It has a message for all children everywhere”.
